The Buy Box is the default offer a marketplace attaches to the "Add to Cart" button when multiple sellers list the same product — on Amazon it is now formally called the Featured Offer. Because most shoppers buy without scrolling to other sellers, winning the Buy Box effectively means winning the sale.

Marketplaces award the Buy Box algorithmically, weighing price (including shipping), fulfillment method and speed, seller rating, and stock availability. Price is the most controllable factor, which is why Buy Box competition drives intense repricing activity on popular listings.

Sellers and brands monitor Buy Box ownership across their catalog to detect when they lose the featured position, which competitor took it, and at what price — data that feeds directly into repricing rules and channel-conflict discussions.
